Daylight saving
Istanbul does not observe daylight saving — this offset is fixed all year. London next moves its clocks back on 25 October 2026, to UTC+0.
Only one side changes its clocks
London observes daylight saving and Istanbul does not. The difference between these two cities is therefore not constant — it changes twice a year, entirely because of the London side. A recurring meeting fixed to local time in Istanbul will appear to move by an hour in London, and vice versa.
Scheduling across this corridor
Eastern Europe and the Middle East sit just far enough ahead of Western Europe to shave an hour or two off each end of the shared day without ever threatening it. The overlap remains generous. What varies is daylight saving: Turkey and Russia abandoned seasonal clock changes and hold a fixed offset year-round, while the EU still shifts, so the gap between these cities and Western Europe is not the same in July as it is in January.
About Istanbul
Istanbul abandoned seasonal clock changes in 2016 and has held a fixed offset ever since. This makes it straightforward against other fixed-offset regions but means its relationship to the EU changes twice a year: Istanbul is two hours ahead of Central Europe in winter and only one in summer. Working from a remembered offset will be wrong for half the year.
About London
London is the practical reference point for global scheduling, sitting at UTC in winter and an hour ahead of it in summer. That is precisely why UTC and London time are not the same thing for most of the year, and why "GMT" used loosely between April and October is usually wrong. British Summer Time runs from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October, on the EU schedule rather than the American one.
