Daylight saving
London next moves its clocks back on 25 October 2026, to UTC+0. Mumbai does not observe daylight saving — this offset is fixed all year.
This pair is not a whole number of hours apart
The offset between these two cities includes a half-hour component, so a meeting scheduled on the hour in one city always falls on the half hour in the other. Calendar software handles this correctly, but people converting in their heads routinely get it wrong by thirty minutes.
Only one side changes its clocks
London observes daylight saving and Mumbai does not. The difference between these two cities is therefore not constant — it changes twice a year, entirely because of the London side. A recurring meeting fixed to local time in Mumbai will appear to move by an hour in London, and vice versa.
Scheduling across this corridor
Europe and South Asia is one of the more workable long-distance corridors. India runs a few hours ahead of Central Europe, so the Indian afternoon overlaps the European morning cleanly, and a late-morning European call lands comfortably inside the Indian working day. The half-hour offset is the thing that catches people out: India is not a whole number of hours from anywhere in Europe, so a meeting at the top of the hour in London is always at half past in Mumbai.
About London
London is the practical reference point for global scheduling, sitting at UTC in winter and an hour ahead of it in summer. That is precisely why UTC and London time are not the same thing for most of the year, and why "GMT" used loosely between April and October is usually wrong. British Summer Time runs from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October, on the EU schedule rather than the American one.
About Mumbai
Mumbai runs on India Standard Time, which is offset from UTC by five and a half hours — one of a small number of zones on a half-hour boundary. India has a single timezone despite spanning a considerable east-west distance, and it does not observe daylight saving, so the offset is fixed permanently. Any meeting booked on the hour elsewhere lands on the half hour here.
