Daylight saving
Los Angeles next moves its clocks back on 1 November 2026, to UTC−8. Sydney next moves its clocks forward on 4 October 2026, to UTC+11.
Opposite daylight saving seasons
Both cities change their clocks, but in opposite directions — one is entering summer time as the other leaves it. The gap between them therefore swings across a wider range over the year than a single clock change would produce. Pin recurring meetings to UTC; local time on either side will drift.
These cities are usually on different calendar days
The gap here is large enough that for much of the day the two cities are not merely at different times but on different dates. When you agree a meeting, confirm the date in both cities explicitly — "Tuesday at 9" means two different moments depending on whose Tuesday you mean.
Scheduling across this corridor
Australia and New Zealand are so far ahead of North America that they are usually working on the following calendar day, which makes this corridor as much a date problem as a time problem. The one advantage is that the two regions run their daylight saving in opposite directions: when North America springs forward, Oceania is falling back. The gap therefore swings by two hours across the year rather than staying fixed, and a recurring meeting pinned to local time on one side will drift badly on the other. Book these in UTC.
About Los Angeles
Los Angeles is three hours behind the US East Coast, which makes it the awkward end of any American company's internal scheduling: a 9am meeting in New York is 6am here. For anything involving Europe or Asia the West Coast is either very early or very late, with almost nothing in between. It follows the same daylight saving dates as the rest of the mainland United States.
About Sydney
Sydney observes daylight saving on the southern-hemisphere schedule, moving forward in October and back in April — the opposite of the northern hemisphere. For part of the year the two hemispheres are both on summer time, and the gap between Sydney and Europe or North America changes twice as much across the year as people expect. Australia is not a single timezone: the eastern states, South Australia and Western Australia all differ, and not all of them observe daylight saving.
