Daylight saving

Madrid next moves its clocks back on 25 October 2026, to UTC+1. New York next moves its clocks back on 1 November 2026, to UTC−5.

Both sides change clocks, but not on the same dates

Both cities observe daylight saving, so the offset between them is stable for most of the year. It is not stable during the weeks when one has changed and the other has not — check the transition dates above before scheduling anything in those windows.

Scheduling across this corridor

The transatlantic corridor is the most forgiving of the long-haul pairings, and the only one where a genuine shared working day exists. The window is real but narrow: it opens when the US East Coast starts work and closes when Europe goes home, which in practice means the early afternoon in Europe and the morning in New York. The complication is not the offset itself — it is that the two regions change their clocks on different dates, so the gap silently widens or narrows for a couple of weeks each spring and autumn.

About Madrid

Madrid sits on Central European Time despite being geographically west of London, a legacy of a 1940 decision never reversed. The result is that solar noon falls unusually late and Spanish working hours are shifted accordingly, with a long midday break and a working day that extends well into the evening. Late-afternoon calls that would be unwelcome in Berlin are routine here.

About New York

New York is the reference clock for North American business scheduling — when a US company says "9am ET" without qualification, this is the zone they mean. It observes daylight saving from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November, which is three weeks longer than the European season and the source of the annual transatlantic confusion. The working day starts early by European standards and calls before 9am local are common.
