Only one side changes its clocks
New York observes daylight saving and Mexico City does not. The difference between these two cities is therefore not constant — it changes twice a year, entirely because of the New York side. A recurring meeting fixed to local time in Mexico City will appear to move by an hour in New York, and vice versa.
Scheduling across this corridor
Latin America and North America share most of the working day — the offsets are small and the overlap is generous. What makes this corridor deceptively tricky is daylight saving. Mexico abolished most seasonal clock changes in 2022 and Brazil abandoned its own in 2019, while the United States and Canada still shift twice a year. The gap between these cities is therefore not the same in January as it is in July, even though it feels like it should be.

This is the detail that catches out anyone working from memory: the relationship between Mexico City and any US city is no longer constant, and shifts by an hour twice a year as the American side moves and Mexico does not.
About New York
New York is the reference clock for North American business scheduling — when a US company says "9am ET" without qualification, this is the zone they mean. It observes daylight saving from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November, which is three weeks longer than the European season and the source of the annual transatlantic confusion. The working day starts early by European standards and calls before 9am local are common.
