Daylight saving

Auckland next moves its clocks forward on 27 September 2026, to UTC+13. Sydney next moves its clocks forward on 4 October 2026, to UTC+11.

Both sides change clocks, but not on the same dates

Both cities observe daylight saving, so the offset between them is stable for most of the year. It is not stable during the weeks when one has changed and the other has not — check the transition dates above before scheduling anything in those windows.

Scheduling across this corridor

Australia and New Zealand are close in time but not identical, and both observe daylight saving on their own schedule — New Zealand starts earlier in the spring and ends later in the autumn than the eastern Australian states. For a few weeks each year the usual gap between them changes, which is the classic trap for trans-Tasman recurring meetings. Note also that Australia is not a single timezone.

About Auckland

Auckland observes daylight saving on the southern-hemisphere schedule, starting in late September and ending in early April — a longer season than eastern Australia's, which means the trans-Tasman gap changes for several weeks each year. New Zealand is among the first populated places to enter each new calendar day, and during its summer time it runs thirteen hours ahead of UTC.

About Sydney

Sydney observes daylight saving on the southern-hemisphere schedule, moving forward in October and back in April — the opposite of the northern hemisphere. For part of the year the two hemispheres are both on summer time, and the gap between Sydney and Europe or North America changes twice as much across the year as people expect. Australia is not a single timezone: the eastern states, South Australia and Western Australia all differ, and not all of them observe daylight saving.
